I stand on the step, my breath in rags.
I tentatively raise my arm.
The angry doorknob glares at me.
The flower I hold wilts and sags,
clenched firmly in my sweaty palm.
The doorknob glares reproachfully.
I try to knock – my courage flags.
I stumble backward in alarm.
The doorknob glares. I flee.
